β> This is something that I have personally witnessed (To give some context: I was born and raised in the Philippines but immigrated to the United States by myself, when I turned 18). For example, Filipino passport holders who want to travel to member states of the European Union, are required to provide documentation such as bank statements and the likes, which are supposed ways of determining your likelihood to overstay your welcome. The number of days you are permitted to stay in the EU, is directly proportionate to the income you make. As logical as this sounds, it is in fact, unfortunately, discriminating; and yet, I do understand that nations have a right to protect their assets. Resources are finite after all. I think of a nation like a ship: A ship has a finite amount of resources like food, for passengers onboard, but still has enough extra resources to support a few more individuals rescued while lost-at-sea (an analogue to refugees). Yet, when too many of these lost-at-sea individuals come on board, their presence saturates the density of the ship, eventually causing it to sink, if not, putting a strain on the resources onboard. This is a simplification of what is happening in California, with the poverty rate increasing in the state, as they try to take on more and more illegal immigrants or when other states send over their homeless citizens for California to care for them, for example, and the current mass exodus of life rafts pulling away from the ship leaving her to fend for herself, as I write this. I stopped counting the number of people I know and know of, who left California, when my Los Angeles neighborhood fell silent, and when “For Rent” signs started going up left-and-right. And yet, “abandon ship” in itself, doesn’t discriminate either. The ones left behind to suffer, will still be the poorest of the poor, as the rich are guaranteed to have the means of saving themselves β and so the cycle begins once again…. but in a different place.
